WAG-9 & WAG-12 Reverser Handle Orientation

Important operational guidance for Loco Pilots

⚠️
Important

The reverser handles in WAG-9 and WAG-12 may have opposite physical orientations for the same intended locomotive movement. Correct interpretation must be based on the markings and selected direction.

01

Physical Orientation

The directional reverser handles in WAG-9 and WAG-12 are physically oriented in opposite directions for the same locomotive movement.

02

Design Difference

This is primarily due to differences in the cab/control-desk arrangement and locomotive configuration.

03

Same Movement Direction

Although the handles may appear to point in opposite physical directions, the selected Forward/Reverse command corresponds to the intended direction of locomotive movement.

04

Do Not Judge by Handle Position Alone

The physical orientation of the handle should not be used as the sole indication of locomotive direction.

05

Follow Markings

The Loco Pilot should operate the reverser according to the Forward (F), Neutral (N), and Reverse (R) markings provided on the respective locomotive.

06

Operational Verification

Before moving the locomotive, the selected reverser position should be verified with the actual intended direction of movement.

07

Safety Aspect

Proper familiarisation with the specific locomotive type is essential to avoid incorrect interpretation of the reverser position.

08

Conclusion

The opposite physical orientation of the reverser handles in WAG-9 and WAG-12 is a design/configuration feature and should be widely counselled to all crew individually by the Group CLI.

🔄 Reverser Direction — Quick Reference

F — Forward N — Neutral R — Reverse

Always follow the markings provided on the respective locomotive and verify the intended direction before movement.
